The Necklace Summary. At the beginning of the story, we meet Mathilde Loisel, a middle-class girl who desperately wishes she were wealthy. She's got looks and charm, but had the bad luck to be born into a family of clerks, who marry her to another clerk (M. Loisel) in the Department of Education.
Throughout the short story several people went out of their way to attempt to make Mathilde feel more assured and peaceful with her own being. However, little did Mathilde know that some of the material things that she was given were cosmetic in nature, none more so then her much adorned necklace that she wore to the formal party hosted by the Minister of Education.
All of a sudden she discovered, in a black satin box, a superb necklace of diamonds; and her heart began to beat with an immoderate desire. Her hands trembled as she took it. She fastened it around her throat, outside her high-necked dress, and remained lost in ecstasy at the sight of herself. Then she asked, hesitating, filled with anguish.
