Salary Outlook with PhD in Computer Science Degree.
How long does it take to receive a PhD or M.Sc. degree? The typical tenure of a PhD student in our department is 12 to 15 semesters. The expected time to finish the M.Sc. program is 5 to 6 semesters (within two years).
Factors Affecting Completion Time. Your time as a doctoral student may be shorter or longer than the average, depending on a number of factors. Some doctoral degree programs have requirements that take longer to complete because of their nature; for example, a research project might lengthen your time because you'd need to design a study, find participants, run the study and finalize your.
Also, students will have to take prerequisite courses in mathematics and other sciences before taking the majority of computer science courses. Examples of prerequisites include calculus 1, 2 and 3, linear algebra and chemistry or physics.
How Long Does It Take to Get a PhD? A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) usually requires at least five to six years in an accredited graduate school. Many students might take seven to nine years to complete depending on exams, coursework and dissertations required. Which One Costs More? Because a PhD takes longer to complete, it usually costs more money.
The reason I would do this is because, if you are aggressive, you can usually get an MS in 5 years, while a BS will take 4. When companies make you an offer, they'll plug your degree into a formula, and you'll make 10%-30% more than people with a bachelors.

At a minimum, take a basic programming class. Other computer science classes will help especially if you go into an area dealing with large datasets. In hindsight, I wish I had taken classes on optimization and algorithm design. Know that learning to program and learning a computer language are different things. You need to learn to program.
